11. How can Christchurch be both Reformed and Charismatic?

Because we have a high view of scripture (we thrill to the doctrine of the sufficiency of scripture) we must embrace what that scripture teaches in all areas of life and conduct. It’s our conviction that the gifts of the Holy Spirit, all of them, are taught in scripture as available and helpful for the church today. However, we also fully believe that the canon of scripture is closed and that no gift of the Holy Spirit can supersede it, take away from it or add to it. For this reason we would encourage the gifts to comfort and edify folk, but would not invest them with the authority of scripture in directing anyone’s lives or decisions. We actively pursue the presence of God in worship, but don’t believe that should necessitate anything weird or strange! When we gather together we are passionate in our praises, but not passionate just for the sake of it…that’s why we ensure that our songs and hymns are full of truth and sound doctrine; we want to be effected by truth and not just the music (especially as the music at Christchurch is so good!)
