What’s our goal?

Simply put, our mission is to plant and build a biblical gospel-centered congregation in Ireland, one which models lives that have bee n transformed by grace through the gospel of Jesus Christ.

The Journey

The journey of this plant began when the Mc Cans moved to Virginia in 2004 to become part of Kingsway Community Church in Richmond, a member of the Sovereign Grace Ministries family of churches. While there, God began to highlight a desire in Bob’s heart to see the gospel preached in Ireland and develop a growing burden to see a church planted there.

In August, 2006, the family was sent to the Pastors College in Gaithersburg, Maryland to pursue biblical studies and ongoing evaluation, while continuing to seek God as to what lay ahead for the future.

Following graduation in May 2007, the family began the preparations for moving overseas, and in July left Virginia for Newport, Wales. Here, Bob will serve as a pastoral intern in Christchurch – another member of the Sovereign Grace Family of churches, before making the final move to Ireland in 2009.

Tell me more about the Mc Cans

The Mc Cans

Bob grew up near Cashel in County Tipperary helping on his father’s sheep farm before finding employment with Bank of Ireland in 1984. Four years later he moved to London where he continued in banking before finally moving to the United States in 1988. It was while living in upstate New York that God apprehended his heart and opened his eyes to the Gospel.

Annemarie was born in New Jersey but moved to New York at age 6. She was blessed to grow up in a Christian home and was saved at an early age. She met Bob in 1990 and they were married in 1992.

Since then, God has blessed then with four wonderful children; Caroline, Alexandra, Conor and Karina.

So, what’s the plan?

Following the Sovereign Grace method of planting churches, we are in the process of seeking the Lord with regard to a specific location, we will then also be seeking to assemble a church-planting team to form the nucleus of the new Irish plant. Over the next two years, we believe God will move on the hearts of others whom He is calling to be a part of this mission.

Tell me more about Ireland
  • Population of approx 4 million in the Republic
  • Approx 1% of the population is Evangelical
  • 10% of the population is now non-Irish
  • The largest non-Irish ethnic group are Polish (250,000)
  • Ireland has seen inward migration from China, Africa, Russia, Hungary, Slovakia, Germany and some Eastern European countries
  • Ireland has seen more change in the last 5-6 years than most nations see in a century
  • Economically and technologically, Ireland is prospering.
  • Most of the population/housing growth is in the urban centers but not just in large cities, as many traditionally small towns are seeing massive expansion
  • Many groups have sent missionaries and church planters in the last decade. Some have been successful but many have seen little or no growth.
  • The ones that have been more successful are predominantly Irish or returning Irish.
  • Ireland has a very young population comprising mostly of “disinterested” or at best “Nominal” Catholics.
  • Catholic churches are closing in some parts and amalgamating parishes to compensate for falling attendance and a decline in vocations to the Priesthood
  • Despite the major changes in the last few years, Ireland could still be described as “Culturally Catholic”.
  • Many of the ethnic groups have established churches but they tend to be almost 100% non-Irish in membership. This is particularly true among the African churches.
